By Matt Mosley..Eagles coach Andy Reid has already indicated that Michael Vick will be the backup quarterback for the Eagles on Sunday. Vick didn't play against the Broncos last week because of a quad contusion but he'll be expected to go the distance against the Cowboys if something happens to starter Donovan McNabb.

This begs a question that no one in Philly seems to be asking this week. Is it really wise to make Vick the No. 2 quarterback when he's probably not going to have much effect on the game from the Wildcat formation? If he was truly a weapon out of the Wildcat, I could understand taking the risk of making him McNabb's primary backup, but that's not the case. Vick has been effective at times, but let's not act like his play has had any bearing on wins or losses. Some fans might point to his performance against the Falcons, but the Eagles were going to blow that team out with or without Vick on the field because Atlanta was missing its starting quarterback and running back.

Now, in a huge game against the Cowboys, it appears that Reid is taking another unnecessary risk. As long as McNabb's healthy throughout the game, it won't matter. But if by chance McNabb suffers a game-ending injury in the first quarter, I believe the Eagles would have a much better chance of winning with Kevin Kolb coming on in relief. He's been in the offense longer and he showed that he can flourish in two starts earlier this season.

This is not a story line that Eagles fans have concerned themselves with -- and that's understandable. But if something happens to McNabb in this game, it would become a huge story. I don't believe Vick's ready to run this offense for an extended amount of time, and plus, he's playing through a painful injury.

You could bring in Kolb as the emergency quarterback but by rule that would preclude either McNabb or Vick from returning to the game. This is one of the risks in the Vick redemption tour that no one really wants to talk about.
