If you live in the United States, you will probably be limited to only a few providers for your local area. DSL can be had in my neck of the woods for much less than cable, if you can put up with the usual woes that can plague DSL. Otherwise, some type of prepaid mobile broadband may be in order, especially if you can get WiMax.
