I bought outdoor antenna at CostCo for $60, got all HD stations in my local area. I put it in attic, not outside since my house is 2 level; it scary to climb to the roof :)

WELCOME TO THE SHOEBOX ANTENNA PAGE! Make Your Own Antenna for Free (and legal) HDTV

I saw this article a few days ago. My only question is if it's dated. Otherwise it looks like an easy project to try.

There's a whole slew of home made antenna reading. I found some good ones on You Tube.

Sorry guy's but none of the home brew antennas will work too good at 100 miles, also there are no indoor antennas that will work at that range.

Take it from a retired TV and radio engineer, the only antennas that will work at 100 miles from the TV stations are the large outdoor, mast mounted on the roof, or tower type, and some would also need a pre-amp.

Also this thread is almost over 2 years old.

Buddy made one he found on You tube and put it in his attic. Works for him and he pulls in 16 channels.
I agree not the greatest thing but he is within 100 miles of quite a few stations.

made the coat hanger antenna several years ago
used 14/2 wire instead of coat hangers
pulled in over 30 channels
range was 50-60 miles

It all depends on location, if the transmitters are way up high on a mountain top and you have nothing in the way it may work.

But remember, the Earth is not flat, if you and a friend hold a flag on a 6 foot mast and start walking away from each other, in a flat area, you will not be able to see the top of other flag after about 6 miles. (using binoculars)

This is why 99% of the TV and FM radio transmitters are mounted as high as they can get them, mountians are a grate start, very tall TV towers are used when there are no mountains to use, or tall buildings are used when a tower is not practicable.

In most applications an outdoor antenna will work the best, it can be most any type, home brews work at most locations, but when you get far enough away they may have problems, but as I said, it's all in the location.

In my 50 years of chasing RF signals I have seen almost every type of antenna known to Man, (and some unknown) and most have worked (to a point) but when you get out in the boonies (over 75 miles) it gets very tough to pick up a station thats at lets say TV channel 60 at 75 to 100 miles, the signals are as weak as a candle 5 miles away and trying to read by it.

Oppps too much coffee again, I gotta watch that caffeine intake after 12PM.........................Sorry................ ..........................My fault............................I'll go weed spray the back 40 for a bit.
