Sorry if this question has been asked before but I can't seem to find the answer...

I got a hold of an older Toshiba 4200 laptop the other day. My wish is to use my neighbours wifi to "play around" a bit. For conversational purposes let's just say that I have their WEP key from Beini and Feeding Bottle. I'm using a USB range extender from RaLink and am getting a good 3-4 bars. Everything seems to work well (connected, WEP key added, etc) but I can't seem to connect. I keep getting the "web page can not be displayed" page coming up. I did have it working once because one of my other neighbours had an unencrypted linksys that I got on to. Downloaded some stuff and everything worked great. That went away so I started looking at the WEP idea. I'd like to eventually use the old Toshiba to interface (IKS) with my CS600S w/o having my name attached to anything.

Any ideas???

Did your neighbor allow this?

If they are using MAC filtering and even if no authentication is needed, your MAC addy will still need to be on their filter list.

Do you have your PC set to obtain an IP address and a DNS from them?

Also if they are too far away, you may be getting their signal, but is yours getting back to them, remember it's a two way street, also it could be like Polly said.

I install WIFI monitoring software on all my WIFI systems, it tells them if there are any unauthorized users on the system, and will block them from connecting, (detects WIFI hackers) they may have the same setup.

Right click on the wireless icon on your laptop down in the taskbar, and click properties or status, depending on OS and make sure that you have an IP , and Gateway on the support tab...also assuming this is okay with your neighbor and MAC filtering isn't enabled ...

Get your own internet.

That takes the fun out of trying to see if you can do it:innocent:

Hacking WEP will really tick off your neighbor and can get you thrown in jail.

Not to mention, they will have logs of everything you do.

On a side note, I had a neighbor who did the exact same thing to me. He thought he was good, but in the end
he was connected to my network which allowed me to have access to his pc. Without getting into it much further,
he wound up being hacked himself and after deleting core OS files on his pc he got a knock on the door.

Don't do it. You may not know who or what your connecting to and the possibilities for trouble are endless....lol

network magic is a great program ....

if you really want to test free wifi, get the proper equipment and find a public wifi to play with, either a library , McD's ...internet cafe ..whatever....unsecured and open to the public without ticking off the neighbor...

A word of caution to all that may try this, or are doing this right now.

Some States (and Country's) have laws in place to punish people caught doing this, think of this as UN-authorized wire tapping, some fines can go as high as 10K and some have jail time up to 5 years.

And in some places they don't even care, but to be sure check your local, City, County and State laws.

So think it out, do you want the knock at the door?

Gee sounds to me just like someone stealing a SATELLITE SIGNAL.

Perhaps, and I guess you may be right. However if you choose to log in to your neighbors WiFi network have at it, although
much like anything else consider the risks accordingly.

Scr3wing your neighbor and running IKS on their network while your cracking a wifi signal is way different.

I love how people throw stones when they live in glass buildings.
Do you run IKS cmasjoe? If so, your no better than anyone else who does. Cracking your neighbors Wifi encryption
to run IKS puts you on a different level.

As stated before, if you want to run free wifi, run free wifi from a free hotspot. Don't hack your neighbor.

You don't know the trouble that may confound you if you choose to do so.

My point exactly, they were idiots.
Im sure we both know it doesnt matter the mac or amount of routers involved when someone connects to a home network.

It is still a direct line for someone who knows how to play....

Honor amongst thieves is out these days i guess.

Like posted above, get your own internet, if someone is not bright enough in the net world does not make it right that you exploit that.

DU, who would want to tap into your business on line, could you imagine the spam.lol

this is interesting to say. I did it a mile across the lake but i would
not suggest it unless you dont own anything when they come to get ya but it does work.

""If they are using MAC filtering and even if no authentication is needed, your MAC addy will still need to be on their filter list""
+1

You can always try to navigate to their routers home page, 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.254.254 try admin admin, or admin nothing, or some other default password, add your mac address. problem solved.

I used to hack networks at work, use torservers, rename the proggie I was using to a system file name with a . or a S so unless it was a super systems admin, they'd never know. The girls loved me as I could get them all on facebook. Of course the IT dept had zero clue that one of the nursing staff was way smarter and more versed in hacking than they........

I run with all security off on my wifi so my kids and all there friends can use it.......I am not to concerned about the neighbours using it...small town...few neighbours.
I run with my ssid broadcast turned off and change my ssid every couple weeks.
I have network magic also.....never noticed any leechers.
was just wondering how easy to connect to someones wifi when the ssid is not broadcasted?

Yeah most devices can still hit even if SSID is not broadcasting. I have several devices that cant though, so I broadcast, and enable mac filtering. Love to see my "unsecure network" pop up all the time.... LOL. As much as my neighbors see association FAILED!

I would grab the mac addresses from the kids and enable mac filtering. People war drive all the time sniffing for unsecure networks. Someone could set outside your house and downloads gigs in no time, without using an algorithm to scramble the headers, then you get a letter from your ISP for downloading movies.

At least password protect it with WPA2 and issue the key to the kids.

it's easy to get a hidden ssid
so how would they get the ssid...would they have to use the same software that detects your wep key or other security?

Kismet or Aircrack. Pretty simple stuff. Good luck.
