Any truth to this?

I guess we wont have to wait too long to find out.

The theories are running rampant, but the one I find funny is how people refer back to the Y2K hoax and how the 2012
theory is the same.

Y2K was based on technology, not an interpretation of ancient beliefs.

IMO we as humans know more of the world and solar system than ever before, but the general population of the earth
is sheltered and fed full of chit in most cases, which really has nothing to do with the question asked, more just
making a statement based on opinion. :)

Its the reset date for the Mayan calender, in our terms it would mean every century would indicate the end of the world..LOL

You could tune to H2 they are talking about the Mayan calendar right now
apparently the calendar was created in 3114 bc.

Interesting theories, whether or not they will prove to be fact or not, it is still interesting.

The end of the world as we know it could come in any number of ways, depending on who you ask. Some people believe global cataclysm will occur when Earth's magnetic poles reverse. When north goes south, they say, the continents will lurch in one direction or the other, triggering massive earthquakes, rapid climate change and species extinctions.

The geologic record shows that hundreds of pole reversals have occurred throughout Earth's history; they happen when patches of iron atoms in Earth's liquid outer core become reverse-aligned, like tiny magnets oriented in the opposite direction from those around them. When the reversed patches grow to the point that they dominate the rest of the core, Earth's overall magnetic field flips. The last reversal happened 780,000 years ago during the Stone Age, and indeed there's evidence to suggest the planet may be in the early stages of a pole reversal right now.

But should we really fear this event? What will actually happen when north-pointing compasses make a 180-degree turn toward Antarctica? Will the continents tear themselves apart, if any survive I'm sure they will have one Big story to tell for the future mankind. reason this is about to come or at-least the thought of it is the alignment we will be in on Dec 21st 2012 with the center of our Galaxy the milky way, it's happened before, just not when humans were here to tell about it...yet :)

The true end of the Earth will occur in about 5 billion years or so, that's when the Sun runs out of Hydrogen and starts to expand into a red giant class star, it will be about the size of the current orbit of Mars, the Earth then will be inside the Sun.

Now talking about human extinction, is that the so called "end of the Earth"? Maybe.

Possibilitys:

1. Global nuclear war. (still a chance on this one)
2. World wide mass pandemic. (Spanish flu almost got us back in 1918)
3. Giant asteroid. (Haven't seen one close enough yet)
4. Super volcano erupts. (Mt. Toba almost got us 74,000 years ago)
5. Advanced space race lands and says "OOOHHH yummie, more food"
6, Someone invents a super longivity drug, everyone takes it and it back fires after 5 years.
7. Someone tests a hyper space drive while still on the Earth, we blink out of this universe.
8. Someone was right about the "Black Hole" in our area.
9. Someone tries out the "E=MC3" equation that Einstine didn't tell us about.
10. A close by giant Star goes Nova, and we get wiped out by the radiation.
11. A Gama ray burst gets us.
12. Nothing bad happens and we go on till the Sun gets us.
