Let's begin by saying that your question is definitely not stupid. Your old stb can be used for true fta. You will require a dish between 36"-48", a linear lnb(I prefer the invacom quad because it can do both linear and circular). To take it one step further a motor brings in many sats as well.
What type of programming are you looking for?

Hello luckylager . I have a 36" dish with invacom LNB just like costactc said and his suggestion is a good one . A 36" dish and invacom LNB would work great for True FTA . If you dont have a motor yet , that would be a suggestion also because you will be able to move your dish to many sats and scan them. :okay:

Good info guys and remember the further north you go the bigger the dish should be, I would start at a 39”, this will cut down on weather fades.

Yep,,I agree with Terryl,,,up here in Quebec city I started with a 33" some yrs ago and was really borderline,,,,Got myself a used 4 ft for abt 100 bucks and working great,,,,even in rain, snow,,,except for wind storms of course,,

Many options out there,,,you could even get yrself a used BUD ,,,many people will give them away,,,,,

Let us know what you decide,,,,

Cheers,,,

I use a 33" on a motor here with an invacom in Ontario.Works great but bigger is better although I havent had any fades on 83w for some reason and its probably my weakest sat.

I am all the way down south in the USA and have a 36" and still almost get a 100% signal on the 82/84 sat and a 100% signal on the 91 . Where I am located , I am not allowed to have anything much bigger than a 36" sat dish. Being all the way here down south would be a bit hard to get a good signal on the 91 and 82/84 sats but yet I get a great signal . Maybe I am a little lucky ! ;)

Yr bringing a good point I forgot firemod,,, Make sure to check yr city bylaws concerning dish sizes and max height allowed,,,

For me in my area there is no such bylaws,,,but many places and localities have them in place,,,,,

Can u imagine,,,you find yrself a bud,,,,install it,,,,,and few days later the authorities come by yr house to tell you you have to take it down !!!!!! I would cry a river !!!!!!

Cheers,,,

I'm looking for the regular BEV and 110/119. I was just wondering because I don't need ppv to survive. If i could manage with true FTA that would be awesome. Thanks for the help, very much appreciated

It all depends on what you like, if you like history and biography channels, those 2 can be found in sat 101west wide open, and other sats have some other good stuff, some have foreign channels. Good place to look for channels by language in the ku band is this link

125W for the PBS channels. I'm locked onto pbs world most of the time, it's a great station.

I do get bored of seeing these same things again and again but I always go back to pbs world.

I have 3 Ku band dishes, one locked to 30W and other to the 125w both with good programming, and the third is for the sports feeds (mostly 91w), I'm amazed with the video quality of the feeds even on a SD box (CS6100). I hope next year get motorized at least one of them and get all channels, and also need to wake up the monster BUD (10' unimesh), actually I have it disassembled on the backyard. But still there are alot of viewing options.

Here's a chart showing the satellites in the Clarke Belt. Generally, they're two degrees apart.

Go fta!!!!

Most any city with a population over 100,000 will have 1 or 2 sat stores.Buying online will cost a fortune for shipping because of the dish size.Your location would help us find you a local place.

Maybe you can do a google search on that equipment because we are not allowed to mention sites here . You can look for the best sites and the best price .
Also , if someone recommends a site , they might be recommending a site that is not in your price range or maybe you can find it cheaper on another site .

Quite a few sats have sports feeds on the American side, come up 72, 87, 89, 91, 99 just to mention a few. Whoever needs info on where to purchase sat equipment online, just send me a pm.
