Hi all, I got a WD 1 Terabyte external hard drive.

I was wondering what is the best format for it? Cuz currently it is in FAT32, it seems like it only responds to Windows based machine's (to be more specific, Windows 7 machine's). Tried on a mac and did not work, tried on a Win XP machine, and it did not work.

Even when I do open it in a Win 7 machine, browsing through the file's is really slow. Does anyone know why? It also sometimes freezes for like 10-30secones on "not responding" then if you wait it will eventually come back.

usually drives that big are ntfs
xp should see fat32 fine.
make sure you are using a usb2.0 port on the pc
mac should see it also

+1 NTFS is the way to go, especially with Windows 7. FAT32 has a limitation of 4GB.

a computer that crashes is better off with ntfs, better recovery.
fat32 has a filesize limit of 4GB,the drive itself can be big.

If you are going to put dvd rips or blueray movies on it you would have to format to NTFS. Fat32 is just so limited with the large file sizes.
