I`ll never support a ban on fighting in the NHL---what I will support 100% is the NHL ridding itself of the "instigator rule"---IMO it would stop a lot of the cheap stuff in it`s tracks and it`s the cheap stuff that leads to most of the head injuries we see now. That and lose some of the plastic body armor that makes supermen out of the cowards of the NHL .

as per TSN

It's been argued that dropping the gloves in hockey is an integral part of the sport's tradition, but a recent study suggested that most Canadian fans would support a ban on fighting.

60% of Canadians, aged 18 years or older, that watch and follow the sport agree that fighting should be banned from professional hockey, according to a recent nationwide Forum Research survey.

"Based on these findings, it looks like Canadians are growing increasingly weary of the amount of fighting that takes place in Canada's national pastime – and perhaps of the impact on its players," Forum Research president Dr. Lorne Bozinoff said.

"With the recent deaths of NHL enforcers and retired players—along with marquee names such as Sidney Crosby being sidelined due to head injuries—people are starting to question the role of fighting in the game. With the NHL making it clear they won't even consider a ban at this time, it will be interesting to see how this situation develops in the months and years to come."

The study found that females were significantly more likely to support a fighting ban than males (74% to 46%) while older Canadians were also more likely to support a ban (86% for age 65 and up, 73% for ages 55-64, 64% for ages 45-54, 55% for ages 35-44, and 40% for ages 18-34.)

Fans in Quebec had the highest support for the fighting ban (67%), followed by fans in Ontario (61%), the Atlantic region (57%), BC (55%), and the Prairies (51%).

Fighting in hockey is not the cause of many serious injurys it's the full speed hits by guys wearing SWAT equipment. Take away the high impact gear and the cheap shot hits and watch the dirty stick work and the injurys would drop. As a famous singer said R-E-S-P-E-C-T let a guy who uses chicken chit tactics get his arse kicked a few times he will learn what it is

There have been so many illegal hits and checks lately its not funny.. Problem is goons are a dime a dozen while great playmakers and scorers are rare.. Easiest way to look good with no talent is to put the oponents talent in a coma or the hospital.. Time to get rid of Bettman, he is the reason the sport is going downhill..

Both burnsy and JCO......get rid of the instigator rule and the problem of "cheap shot" guys will disappear. IMO--that rule is responsible, at least in part, for a lot of the free wheeling cowards to go unchecked thru the NHL. "Goons" are a dime a dozen---losing the instigator will pit goon vs goon and let the game continue as it used to before the namsby pamsbies got involved with the "no fighting, no pitting tough guy vs tough guy" rules that have gone a long way to ruin hockey.

100% Cobra if they let the goons out to keep the cheap shot cowards in line the game would be played as it was ment. If you are a player and you know that if you intentionally hurt a oponant/ cheap shot them the opositions goon is going to come out and kill you, well I call it policing but you get my drift

Ridding hockey of the instigator (goon vs goon) was the brainchild of Gary Bettman...and why???...$$$$$$$$$$. I say $$$$$$ because Bettman was trying to sell Canadian NHL hockey to the less familiar southern U.S. and Bettman`s NHL was to sell Offense= more goals!! Bettman figured the more rule changes he made favoring offense the more likely the game would sell in the southern states. The bigger the scores the better the game was Bettman`s logic in selling the game-----this is NOT Canada`s game!!! It was a Frankenstein created by Bettman and Frankenstein created the cheap shot masters and so on------all in the guise of "bettering the game". Is hockey better??? Not from what I see. Lose the instigator rule and bring back Canadian Hockey.
