CC Sabathia would have clearly been the best pitcher available on the free-agent market if walked away from more than $92 million for the next four years.
But hours before a mdnight deadline to opt out of his New York Yankees contract and enter free agency, Sabathia and the Yankees agreed to a new deal that adds $30 million to his existing contract.
According the Associated Press, the new deal adds a $25 million salary for 2016 and gives the Yankees a $25 million option for 2017 with a $5 million buyout.
"My goal the whole time was to be able to finish my career as a Yankee," Sabathia said in a video posted on Twitter. "I look forward to seeing everybody out at the ballpark next year."
Without Sabathia, the leading pitchers on the free-agent market would have been C.J. Wilson of Texas, Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox and Edwin Jackson of the Cardinals. Teams are also expected to bid heavily for right-hander Yu Darvish when his contract is posted by the Nippon Ham Fighters.
The Yankees need a Sabathia type at the top of their rotation. A proven workhorse, Sabathia went 19-8 with a 3.00 ERA for the Yankees in 2011 and is 59-23 with a 3.18 ERA in his three seasons with the Yankees. He won the AL Cy Young Award with the Indians in 2007 and has been in the top five in Cy Young voting each years since.
