NASCAR penalizes three teams for Talladega infractions

Michael Waltrip Racing may not have seen this coming.

NASCAR on Tuesday handed down severe penalties to three teams fielded at MWR - its Nos. 00 and 56 teams and the No. 47 owned by JTG Daugherty - for unapproved modifications made to the windshields of the cars.

The windshields were confiscated during opening day inspection at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway last weekend and place on display outside the NASCAR hauler.

Several members of other teams said the modifications had the potential of compromising driver safety and created a competitive advantage at a superspeedway track.

The crew chiefs of each of the teams - Rodney Childers, Chad Johnston and Frank Kerr - were each fined $50,000 and suspended for the last four Sprint Cup races of the season.

The car chiefs for each of the teams - Steve Channing, Anthony Lunders and Raymond Fox - were also suspended for the same period.

In addition, the drivers for each of the teams - David Reutimann, Martin Truex Jr. and Bobby Labonte - were docked 25 points and each of the teams lost 25 owner points.

"We do not condone this type of activity and as such we will take appropriate internal corrective action immediately," MWR said in a statement.

"We thank NASCAR for providing a fair and equitable platform for all of its competitors and respect its decisions; therefore, we will not appeal."

JTG Daugherty does not plan to appeal, either.

"We are very disappointed in this entire situation," team co-owner Brad Daugherty said in a statement.

Beginning this weekend, Bobby Kennedy will take over as Reutimann's crew chief and Pat Tryson will serve as crew chief for Truex. Brian Burns will serve as Labonte's crew chief at JTG Daugherty for the remainder of the season.
