Believe it or not and I do not remember where I seen/heard this but if it is a small hole, use toothpaste. It will dry hard, easy to sand and cheap.

If you have tried to clean/remove toothpaste from your bathroom sink then you know what I mean.

Before using sheet rock mud, remember to set the nails or screws.

Sheetrock might not need to be necassary depending on how deep the repairs are...Sheetrock does not shrink back and actually does the opposite.Three coats of regular compound will sufffice.As mentioned screws/nails and any thing protruding must be recessed or when you sand they will reappear..
