..........A tree????... Believe me I am as green as they come but this tree which "belongs" to the city on my front yard is killing me..Of course they won't let me take it down.. I have spent thousands in Plumbing/sewer repairs along with the roots also breaking the concrete on my driveway.. Any hints would be appreciated..

Use a cordless drill with a 1/2" bit and drill a few holes into the tree about 24" from the base and in on an angle of about 45 degrees..
Make it the length of the bit ..about 3 to 4 " deep..
Then pour a combination of mecoprop, 2.4-D and dicamba into the holes.. (Killex is the brand name that combines it in the proper amounts..)
There are probable other name brands that have the same ingredients.
The tree will die before the next season.and the city will have to cut it down before it falls down.. :)

Bol, since you've already asked about having the tree cut, after using one of these methods to kill the tree, who do you think they will suspect? No idea of the criminal laws in your area, but obviously destruction of city property and fines. If they sued civilly or demanded compensation for the value of the tree, that could be more expensive than you would be willing to pay. There was a builder in Washington state that cut a state owned tree to improve the views from the properties he was developing. He was fined $50k per house.

It would be easier to learn to live with the tree. I have large trees right next to driveways and sewer lines and have no problems. I put rock salt down the drains several times a year to keep the lines clear and encourage root growth away from the driveway by driving a rod into the ground at various points away from the drive and deep feeding the tree roots with fertilizer. JMO

"Any" has the right answer. I`ve wounded many a tree to the point of the city having to remove them. I`m figuring the idea is to "kill" the tree asap so try using an auger bit on a high speed drill. Use the high speed drill cause you`ll use an 8" or longer auger bit drilling angle down. drill about 5 holes and pour in "roundup" or the like every few days keeping the holes filled as the tree drinks the poison. Works every time. Use high speed because as you drill deep the tree is wet and a cordless will bind using a 1/2" or bigger auger bit. Good luck Bols and don`t get caught.

Use copper nails as DU mentioned, or drill small pilot holes and use some stripped 12 gauge copper wire, the tree will die.

But in some cases you will have to remove and replace the tree as the city owns the parking strip in some city's and you have to maintain it, go figure huh, they own it but you have to maintain it, this maintenance includes replacing broken concrete sidewalks and curbs also dead trees.

I replaced 8, they never said I had to water them.

Salt the base and keep it up. Will kill the roots, no one will know.
