BOSTON -- Officials say at least 34 students were sickened by fumes Monday at a Boston charter school.

Thirty-four students were evaluated at the Excel Charter School after complaining of nausea and dizziness and taken to area hospitals for further treatment, NewsCenter 5's Kelley Tuthill reported.

The sick students were taken to Tufts, Children's, Mass General and Boston Medical Center.

The school was evacuated at about 10 a.m. after people reported smelling fumes, possibly natural gas, and getting sick at the school Monday morning.

Boston fire officials said a contractor working on the building's roof released some natural gas. The Health Department will decide when it is safe to return to the building.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority sent buses to the school to keep the evacuated students warm.

The school, which has about 211 students in grades 5 though 8, is located at 1150 Saratoga St. in East Boston.
