Buffalo or Linksys would be my two choices, with the Buffalo having more features. I have a standard linksys wired router, and a linksys wireless access point, both perform flawlessly. I haven't used any Buffalo products but they look excellent, and have good reviews.

You shouldn't have to place the pc too close to the router to have a good signal . Which router are you using currently ? card on pc ?

Linksys. Nothing better for the price.

Maybe for the price , certainly one of the more popular ones but buffalo beats them hands down.

I bought a Buffalo "Nfiniti high power router and AP" a few months ago, to replace my Netgear unit, that I decided to use at our vacation house.

It works fine, but I really don't see any difference between it and the aforementioned Netgear. Neither units signal could be picked up in our family room, about 80 feet and several walls away.

using my linksys in repeater mode, I was able to turn up the transmit power , and my signal went from 2 bars, to full strength ...something to consider ...

Something both of you need to consider. Although with DDWRT, you can turn up the TX power, Linksys doesn't have an amplifier on their antenna, therefore you'll get good signal for awhile, but drastically diminish the life of the router. Most buffalo however have a high-power antenna built in (WHR-HP-54g)...a lot of buffalos have the HP in their name, meaning high power, therefore you can turn it up to 250mW. On a linksys, without an external antenna, I wouldn't go past 75.

Buffalo is better than linksys. Something else to consider is Asus, they make really good ones too. Netgear out of the box rocks, but not as tweakable as the 3 previously mentioned. If you are going to install DDWRT/tomato, then Buffalo is #1, Asus #2 and Linksys is #3. Linksys is actually one of the worst routers out of the box because of the crappy firmware. Buffalo's is also choppy depending on the model.
