Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard may have played his last NHL game.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli delivered some bleak news to a Boston newspaper on Wednesday.

"Marc Savard won't play this year," Chiarelli told the Boston Globe. "Nothing has changed in our monitoring. He'll be examined and he'll be declared unfit to play.

"Based on what I see, what I hear, what I read, and what I'm told, it's very unlikely Marc will play again," Chiarelli said.

The 34-year-old centre had 10 points in 25 games last season before missing the rest of the year with a concussion.

He was originally hurt by a check from Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke on March 7, 2010.

After missing training camp with post-concussion syndrome, Savard battled his way back into the lineup only to be felled by a hit from former teammate Matt Hunwick in the second period of a January contest.

"Now, knowing the uncertainty of this injury, there's always a chance (he could play)," continued Chiarelli. "But based on what I'm told, it's very unlikely he'll play. As an employer, I support him and hope he gets back to living a healthy life."

On August 1, Savard had his day with the Stanley Cup and told TSN about his continuing health problems.

"It's obviously been a long road for me; I'm still suffering with a lot of daily issues right now, it's been a tough go," said Savard. "I'm just trying to get through and not worry about hockey right now, just worry about my health because I have three young kids and they're important to me."

Savard is signed through the 2016-17 season.

This kind of news simply makes me sick---The NHL has to wake up get rid of the plastic elbows, teach the kids at a young age to respect each other and most importantly the NHL must rid themselves of the plague of headhunters the likes of Matt Cooke, Raffi Torres and their kind who came to the limelight upon the signing of the "instigator rule". Lose the Instigator Rule and let the stars be the stars of the NHL.

NHL has to get rid of Bettman and his Napoleon complex mixed with a need for unnecessay violence to sell more seats to wresling and UFC fans..

man that is too bad . I hate hearing things like that but it is one of the risks of the game. I also hate doing this but time to date myself again. I remember when there was only 6 teams. Players are bigger, stronger and faster now than they were then and for the most part a whole lot less skilled. Players then respected each other. 90% of the guys in the league today couldn't have made the pros back then. Even with the addition of all the European players I doubt you could make 10 good teams today of the same caliber as back then. Now all you need is 2 good players on a team and 18 guys that go about 6' 4" and 225lbs. All the big guys have to do is put on their full body armour and wobbl around trying to drill one of the good players on the other team and make an annual salary of $225000+.

I think they should stick the weasel Bettman on the ice and let cheap shot artists take pot shots at him for 60 minutes. Now there is something I would pay $100 for a ticket in the nosebleed section to watch

getting rid of those elbows pads seems to be a no brainer as now their top player is probably out for the season if not for good, also they should go to no touch icing before someone dies or gets crippled for life...
