Don't know if this is the right section. how can an enduser protect oneself from prying eyes. Use proxy or something else or is it impossible.

Move next door to a Starbucks or the local library or any other public WIFI.

If someone wants to find your location via the internet they will.

i live about little less than half a mile from starbucks they offer free wifi. How can i reach their signal. Is there an outdoor wifi antenna. that will extend the signal.

this guy told me DN "usually" doesn't go after endusers only the guys that supply the product.

You may need two things, one an outdoor yagi antenna for WIFI, and the second is a booster.

The yagi will get the signal from them to your router, but you need to be able to get back to them, one way is a bi-directional signal booster.

This booster will amplify your outgoing signal to the antenna as the coax involved getting the router connected to the antenna will attenuate the WIFI signal so much it wont be useable, it will also amplify the incoming signal, thus making for a higher data connection both ways.

There are many other ways to do this, but the way I described has been proven by me over a 10 mile link, but that was using some very big 10 foot dishes.

They also make USB to 1 watt and 2 watt WIFI devices, I have used those before, one draw back is that they sometimes don't like to be on 24/7 365.

One drawback to using a public WIFI is that someone can intrude onto your system, there are hackers that love to sniff your data files on public systems.

the yagi and the booster both plug into your router right. yagi thru a coax cable. and the booster via usb?

The booster goes on the coax, to the antenna from the router, there are no USB WIFI adapters that will plug into a router, they have to plug into a PC. (USB port)

Also a USB device cant run more then 15 feet without an active USB extension cable, and then your limited to about 60 feet,(4 back to back) there are USB to CAT 5 adapters that can run 200 feet, but they are troublesome.

There are also WIFI antennas that have the WIFI transmitter built in they use a CAT5 cable with a POE injector, these are expensive.

What I have done in the past is to use a WIFI extender, it can mount outside and be used as a WIFI bridge to your router, these can use a yagi for the long hop and a small local antenna for the hop to your router.

They look like this.

thanx for the info bro.
are there any recent cases of DN busting end users.

Not sure it that is true. I have not tried to modify a Linksys Wrt54g to either USB and/or Db9 but have read about same. I will probably try as I am curious.

Some routers have a USB port for the purpose of connecting a 3G internet stick, not sure if a wifi adapter would play nice with one though.

If you're installing an outdoor antenna, keep the coax run as short as possible, at 2.4ghz the signal will attenuate very quickly in coax cable. Another option is to mount a standard router in a weatherproof enclosure, and run power over Ethernet to power it. You can also mount the router in the attic, very close to where the cable enters the house, and again run power over Ethernet to power it.

If you do mount any hardware outside, make sure you have a lightning arrestor right before the cable(s) enter the house. This goes for both coax and cat5.
