It seemed an odd outfit for a man last seen outside prison - during his trial for the Lockerbie bombing - in formal Arab robes, the Times of London reported.

Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi shuffled onto his plane out of Scotland, having been given early release on compassionate grounds, clad in a white tracksuit.

Now Scottish justice secretary Kenny MacAskill has revealed that the strange sartorial choice was necessary to disguise the body armor which Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi was wearing underneath, the paper reported.

Addressing a Scottish parliament inquiry into the Holyrood government's handling of al-Megrahi's release, MacAskill said that a bomb-proof vehicle was also required to transport the terminally-ill Libyan to the airport from Greenock Prison.

He revealed the details to illustrate the security which would have been required to keep al-Megrahi in Scotland following his release and why he had sent him back to Libya instead
