New technology helps protect P.E.I. cabbies

PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) - A Prince Edward Island cab company has installed technology in its taxis to protect its drivers from increasing crime.
Yellow Cab has implemented a new system that provides an emergency button in every vehicle.
If a cab driver is getting robbed, pushing the button will alert the dispatcher, who will call police unbeknownst to the attacker, said company owner Kirby Eldershaw.
The new system also allows the company to see where its taxis are at any time, which will make operations more efficient by reducing radio chatter, he said.
P.E.I. has only had a handful of incidents over the past decade, but Eldershaw said times are changing and he wants peace of mind.
And while the system cost more than $30,000 about $1,000 per cab it's money well spent, he said.
