Two children discovered dead
Sat Nov 28, 8:15 AM
Two children have been killed, a woman is in hospital and a man considered a murder suspect is in custody after police were called to a Panorama Hills home last night.
Cops were summoned about 9 p.m. to check on the welfare of people in a home in the 100 block of Panorama Hills Pl. N.W.
Officers walked into the home and found a boy and a girl, both dead.
The injured woman and the male suspect were found upstairs.
The man surrendered peacefully, said Calgary police Insp. Vic Trickett.
Insp. Trickett wouldn't say who called police to the two-storey home.
Investigating homicide scenes involving children is a difficult job for the officers involved, said Trickett.
"Even at this point in my career, it's a difficult thing to understand and accept," said the veteran officer.
Trickett wouldn't say how the children were killed, but said it was evident to officers they were dealing with homicides as soon as they arrived.
"It's probably one of the more gruesome sides of police work," he said.
"These types of scenes can have quite an effect on people."
One neighbour said he didn't hear any violence and was surprised to find police investigating the home where a couple lived with their kids.
"These people are the sweetest, nicest people -- just super neighbours," said the man, who didn't want his name published.
"I'm just dumbfounded."
He said he often heard the kids practising the piano in the evening.
Another neighbour said the boy used to come to her dayhome.
"It's very sad -- they were a very nice family," said the woman, who would only identify herself as Catherine
Last night's slayings are Calgary's 23rd and 24th this year.
The homicide unit is investigating.
