Lemiuex as far as I`m concerned can blow it out his ear---Yzerman, however, I have the utmost respect for. Yzerman, I`d listen to just about anything he said whether I agreed or not, at least I`d know it was genuine. Lemieux, on the other hand just so happens to have the team with more fighting majors than anyone in the NHL. Lemieux has the biggest cheap shot artist in the game in one Matt Cooke. If Mr Lemiuex wants us to listen I suggest he police his own house first.

as per TSN

Steve Yzerman wants to hear more from Mario Lemieux.

"I think Mario is one of the most well-respected, intelligent people in the game," the Tampa Bay Lightning GM said Monday on a conference call. "I would encourage him (and) I think we should all encourage him to get more involved with the league because he has a lot to offer."

Lemieux made headlines over the weekend by criticizing the NHL's handling of supplemental discipline following a fight-filled matchup between the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Calling the game a "travesty," the Penguins co-owner said the NHL failed to send the proper message after fining the Islanders US$100,000 and handing two of the team's players 13 games in suspensions -- nine to Trevor Gillies for an elbow to the head of Eric Tangradi and four to Matt Martin for sucker-punching Max Talbot.

"We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action," Lemieux said in his statement. "If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to re-think whether I want to be a part of it."

A source confirmed to The Canadian Press on Monday that Lemieux wouldn't be fined by the NHL for his biting comments.

The Hockey Hall of Famer has kept a low profile since ending his playing career in January 2006. While not endorsing Lemieux's criticism of league discipline, Yzerman indicated that he hopes his former Team Canada teammate will continue to speak his mind.

"Specifically, I don't know (what more he could do)," said Yzerman. "Again, Mario is really a bright guy and he's really a good guy and he's been around the league and carries a lot of weight.

"I think everyone would encourage to be more involved in everything we do as a league."

Lemieux was unafraid to vent his frustration as a player -- famously calling the NHL a "garage league" in 1992 -- but has rarely expressed an opinion in his role as an owner.

In fact, he's taken part in just two news conferences over the last 20 months. Lemieux answered questions after an alumni game during the recent Winter Classic in Pittsburgh and a couple hours before Game 1 of the 2009 Stanley Cup final.

His statement Sunday certainly got the hockey world talking.

"Obviously, when Mario says something it has to be heard and respected," said Montreal Canadiens forward Michael Cammalleri. "I think the reason it has such an impact is because of his reputation and his track record. He's never been a whistle-blower or anything like that.

"He's a guy who is so well-respected and his outlook on the game is pretty keen, so when someone like that has something to say we should all probably listen."

The Islanders were among those that didn't like what they heard from Super Mario. Forward Zenon Konopka, who grew up idolizing Lemieux, thought the Penguins owner was off the mark.

"As soon as I get home, I'm going to take the poster off my bedroom door of Mario," Konopka told reporters in Ottawa on Monday afternoon. "I can't believe he is that far removed from the game that he doesn't realize ... in the heat of the moment what happens."

The number of fights around the NHL has risen sharply in the last few weeks as the intensity of playoff races seems to have picked up.

Too bad they don`t play a tune of Lemieux`s rants of `92.

Once translated read....."they`re holding me, they`re hooking me, they`re getting in my way, so and so didn`t pass to me. How can I break Gretzky`s records if I have to work for goals?
One thing was always common in any statement made by Lemieux-----the word ME.

Watch the replays & READ what Mario said. He was not defending anything Matt Cooke has done.

I agree bud but maybe you missed my point.......
If Lemiuex is soooooo disgusted and apalled at the way things are going in the NHL---why doesn`t he take the first step by ridding himself of Cooke to show the rest he`s at least willing to back up his own words and do something about it.

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Mario Lemieux did a very uncharacteristic thing during Wednesday night's NHL Eastern Conference quarterfinal game against the Washington Capitals.

He used a two-handed slash across the back of Todd Krygier's left leg to fell the Capitals' left wing like a Christmas tree, then jumped on his back and began beating him up.

The incident occurred in the second period, after Lemieux and Krygier had slammed into each other near the boards at USAir Arena.

"I think Mario should be suspended," Krygier said. "I don't even know if I can play the next game [tonight]."

Lemieux was given a five-minute major penalty for fighting, two minutes for slashing, two minutes for instigating and a game misconduct.

Lemieux had no comment, and the NHL said it would not take any further action.

He was complaining that one team went out just too try and hurt & beat up other players. There were fighters going after non fighters. He has never complained about Matt Cooke getting suspended. The trouble is the NHL is so watered down there are always going to be players like Matt Cooke around. There are too many teams. If the NHL really wanted to clean the league up all they would have to do is make the ice surface bigger but they can't because there is not enough talent to play on a big ice surface. Look at the europeans. They can take hits but you can't really run people because you endup so far out of the play you hurt your team.

If Lemieux was complaining about that game with the Isles and only that game----I`d have agreed with him and you 100%. I said it in another thread that Martin came so very close to a Bertuzzi disaster he was lucky. Gillies was just plain insane headhunting that way---hockey has no place for acts like that---it`s cowardice at it`s finest. Of course he wouldn`t complain about a suspension to Cooke--he knew Cooke got what he deserved---but if he knows what Cooke brings to the table why did he sign him???? that`s my point. He`s flapping his yap about cheap shots (Martin & Gillies and rightfully so) but there he goes employing the biggest cheap shot artist in the league.
I can`t remember hearing a peep out of Lemieux in his playing days when Pittsburg employed Kasparitis, Samuelsson and Tocchet all at the same time---three of the most notoriuous cheap shot artists in hockey and all on the same team.
The only knock I`m giving Lemieux here is ----if you`re going to talk the talk be willing to walk the walk. Don`t lead the NHL in PIM, don`t lead the NHL in fighting majors, don`t employ a cheap shot artist yourself-----and then cry foul???? Who is going to listen???
