Did you spill your coffee this morning watching Live with Regis and Kelly?
Regis Philbin, 79, announced that he's ending his run on the show!
First, he and Kelly Ripa casually talked about the weather and the Jets. Then he looked in the camera and said, "I've got one of those announcements to make today. I don't want to alarm anybody, but I have to tell you this because it's going to happen. This will be my last year on the show." Groans went up from the audience. "It's been 28 years," he continued, saying what a "thrill" it's been and noting "all the fun we've had."
Kelly looked a little teary. Philbin went on to say, "There is a time when everything must come to an end for people on camera. Especially for certain old people." He didn't know exactly when his last day would be -- summer or fall, he said, "but we'll have a lot of fun between now and then."
Said Kelly: "I can only speak for America when I say it has been a pleasure and a privilege and a dream come true, and I wish I could do something to make you change your mind."
Later in the show, as he and Kelly answered viewer mail, Philbin said, "I"m not going to retire. I just will be gone."

Said Kathie Lee Gifford, his former co-host, this morning on Today: "He is an amazing guy. He's going to be 80 this coming August, and I think he figures it's just time." But, she added, "I don't think he'll retire. Ever. There's tons of things he can do." And as for working with him, Gifford said, "Oh my gosh. So much fun."
Gifford said, "I wonder what's going to happen? Kelly's still in the prime of her life." She mentioned Jeff Probst as a possible Regis replacement. And said, "About 50 guys right now are calling their agents saying, 'I want that job!' It'll have a whole new life, hopefully. But it'll never be the same. There's only one Reege."
Barbara Walters, 81, called it "shocking news" this morning on The View. But, hey, Larry King's available!
