problem with dvd burning

I'm trying to burn some movies on a stand alone Sony player/burner. When I place a blank Maxell dvd it starts to format, before it finishes formatting I get a "disc error" message on the player. I have tried both +R, -R and also a lens cleaner, still the same. I have burned many dvd's in the past, I don't understand why this is starting now. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Try a different brand of blanks.
Also some DVD burners after a while the laser goes.Even though it can read and play movies and see the blanks it won't burn to them at all.
I know this is the case in my computer anyway so might be the same for any other DVD burner.

It could also be in the movie encription, what software are you using or is it supplied with the burner?

try using convertxtodvd.

do not format, simply stick the disk in and hit record and see what happens
