from the sun...

"Since the crazy start to the season, this has been the most impressive week of hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

They’ve beaten the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals – all ahead of them in the standings – and here is the dilemma and the problem.

Those wins haven’t gotten the Leafs anywhere. They were 13th in the Eastern Conference before the week began: And they are 13th in the Eastern Conference now. They were nine points out of the final playoff spot a week or so ago and they remain nine points out of the playoff today.

The conclusion to this is two-fold: One, the Leafs are playing better. Two, they have no chance, absolutely none, of making the playoffs.

Part of it is because they are nine points behind Atlanta. But that’s not the whole story. The fact they’re nine points behind Atlanta with five teams between them and the playoff spot makes it an impossible climb. It means every time you win a game, you need five teams to lose. It means every time you get a point from a shootout or overtime loss, you need five times to lose outright. The system is wrong so are the three-point games. They don’t just disrupt the standings, they strangle some of the life out of the NHL season. Because if you don’t have hope in places like Ottawa, Buffalo, Florida, and yes even in Toronto, what do you have?

It will take probably 91 points minimum to make the playoffs in the East. The Leafs have 26 now. They would need to win 33 of their final 53 games to accomplish that. And at the same time, they need help from the teams above them.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t see a team that has won 11 of 29 games to date, going 20 games over .500 over the next 53. But at least, if you took away the three-pointers, there might be some hope. Until the three-pointers go away – and please make that soon – this will be the plight of any team that gets behind too fast in a season and finds there’s no real road to recovery."

the first step to recovery is to admit that the leafs suck and always will...sorry but had to get that off my chest lol

I`ve been listening to that "wait till next year" crap since 1967 and it got old a loooooonnnnggggg time ago. Here`s a thought re the 3 point complaint-----don`t get so far behind in the first place that you`re out of the playoffs before Christmas. The Leafs always tease us with a great run in the spring-----but it`s the same old story.....too little too late----wait till next year.
Well for me I`ve had enough of these bumbling buffoons -----I said it at the end of last season, I said it at the beginning of this season and I`m saying it now----if the Leafs don`t make the playoffs this year I`m selling my over 50 year alligence to these idiots on E-bay for $1.
BTW---Phaneuf is a pylon

i am not in favour of the 3 point system at all. whats wrong with ties?? the more they screw around with the game, the worse it will be. back in the day when games were a 4 point game...teams could gain the necessary points when they get hot.

i think there is one gm out there who thinks like me. after the OT 4 on 4, then go to a 3 on 3. then if no decision go to shootout. i would perfer that if nothing else

as for the leafs this system will bury them along with others. my opinion on this young team...is burke is working on them and slowly bringing them around. will take time...a good center...they got the cap space this spring and i am sure will bring in a big name.

win or lose there my team! can't even imagine cheering for anyone else.

go leafs go!!

Win or lose the Leafs make alot of money. Now if they wanted to spend a bit things could perhaps be different. But a good bussiness decision says they won't.But there your team chuckt and thats cool.I have a few faves that suck as well but they are my teams and that will never change win or lose..Cheers

Leafs are a bussiness, dont need to win all the seats are sold at top dollar..
Do you want the leafs to win, stop buying tickets and going to games. If that happens the owners will invest in a winning team to bring up sales.. It happened to the habs a few years ago the nosebleed reds where not getting any takers and season ticket sales plumeted.. Team was vastly improved after..

don't have to worry about me going to games at the acc. i live along way from there..lol. but those torontonians continue to pack the place game after game, and pay top dollar. its the fans that continue to feed the pockets of corperate thugs. i agree with you jc, they got to start boycotting the arena!! stop purchasing merchandise,,etc..

but don't they think if they make a good team, and make the post season...it fills the arena for playoff games...thats alot of extra revenue. something they havn't seen in awhile. so long, they prolly don't know what to do with the extra $$$..loll

NEWS FLASH

c/p Toronto Gazette

Rare Virus Found At ACC

It was discovered from sources, that a rare virus was found at the ACC tuesday night in Toronto. It was said that this type of virus strain was stumbled upon by a custodian in the lower and upper sections of the arena.

ACC custodian employee Burkson Slumplots says, he was performing normal duties in the stands like always, when later that day, found to be in very bad health condition. " i couldn't breath well, and i felt sick...lots of pain!!"

After doctors studied this case with top professers from the University of Toronto, it was concluded that Slumplots aquired this generic virus from the seats at the ACC.

Top University Official says, the virus starts out with a lump in the throat, breathing becomes difficult, vomitimg and sore back symptons can also induce pain.

ACC and MLS were not available for comment, but did however release a short statement, that the stands at the ACC are completly safe and there is no cause for alarm. ACC owners said Slumplots will be compensated for his health issues.

Top Toronto Physicians ae recommending to avoid the ACC until the virus is controlled and a possible antidote is tested.

"Could be some quite nights at ACC for awhile", said a ACC front office clerk.

spending money has never been an issue with the leafs. pre cap they always spent more then most teams and since the cap they usually spend right up to the cap. maybe just a mill or 2 below incase they need to get another player. its how they spend the money is more the proble. 4.5 mill for komaserek?? really bad move. never liked that signing at all. at least giguere's 6.5 will be off the books next year and with the cap going up they will be able to sign a couple good free agents. the only problem is there isn't many great free agents anymore these days because most of the great players are now signing these long term deals.
