First of all dish size is of major importance. For true fta I would recommend a dish of at least 36", even though 33" would suffice. By switch I'm not quite sure what you mean, if you mean a 4x1 then yes it can be used.
List the equipment you plan to use and if your setup will be motorised.

i read on another site i can use my star choice oval dish w/dual lnbf 17.7-12.2 freq. and not motorized. will use a 4x1 switch with dn . but when i do a scan with my nano what sat. do i choose to scan or does it matter if i do blind scan.

Let me get this straight, you have a stationary 110/119 setup? If this is the case, you would need to point your dish to a linear sat. Your sc dish might be able to pull in some of the stronger tp but is a bit small for fta.
I would suggest having a look at lyngsat to see what open ku channels there are and what interests you before actually moving your dish. You can't just slap a linear lnb on your setup as it is and blind scan, it must be aiming to a sat with linear channels.

Check ftalist.com to see what interests you... A 36" dish will be required for true FTA use, and some people choose to add a motor as well.

yes my 110/119 is on a stationary dish and i was going to use my sc dish for fta in stead. i was going try it anyways to see what i can get. i dont really need the extra channels i already got 110/119 and ota. i just thought i have the extra dish i'd try for it.

I didn't realise you were going to setup another dish. Have a look at lyngsat to see what you would like and then try dishpointer.com on how to setup your fta dish.

i look at lyngsat and i was looking at sat91w - 107.3w they are all withen 2 - 3 degrees of each other can i pick up all of them at once or do i need to lock into each one indiviuality. and do i need an lnb for each or can i use my dual lnb for all.

Your dual lnb has a seperation of 9 degrees. In order to hit more sats have a look at lnb holders which can accomodate more then 1 lnb.
Galaxy 17 and Anik f1 are great sats for ku feeds but the channels you are probably interested in are c band, which requires a huge dish.

the sats i was looking at are ku band. so my dish will pick up two sats that are 9 dregrees apart? if thats the do i lock into them and scan like i did with dn?

There are no permanent channels on 91w and 107.3w that are open, only feeds scan in.

It's fun to try & get what you can with what you have, but if this is a one time try for FTA I wouldn't expect much.

Along with a bigger motorized dish I would recommend a different receiver. Personally I would start with a 10' dish.
Ku FTA is great but I spend most of my TV time on C band.

Many more net channels and hd as well on c band.
