My sons' laptop went on the fritz yesterday. It powers up but we get a blank screen. I've been attempting to format it but without success. My pc is a Dell and I can format by pressing ctrl+f11 but it doesn't work on his Dell laptop.
I'm not sure a format will do anything but at this point I'll try just about anything. Any help would be appreciated.

does it flicker when you move the screen up and down?
my old one did that, it was damaged wires to the monitor.

You should be able to install an external monitor for the time being until you find the solution to the problem.

There has been a recall for dells and HP's because of bad nvidea graphics cards.. Chek and see if yours is one of the recalled ones, free repair even if its past the warranty period..

No flickering at all, unfortunately I don't have a spare monitor and the graphics card seems fine. I think maybe a wire to the monitor miight be shorting out and needs changing.
Thanks for the replies, my bud in MTL builds computers so I'll drop it off there tomorrow.

Browse the spects of the laptop on the manufacturers website or in the instruction manual..

C/P Nvidia Issues Resolved: Sent the laptop to HP under the extended service warranty for broken hinge and motherboard/graphics problem. Display and hinge replaced, computer returned to me with unresolved on/off loop. HP confirmed the motherboard was the problem and it was part of the extended service warranty "recall" but I would have to pay because time ended Feb. 28, 2009. HP denies recall but did extend service warranties to cover motherboard/Nvicia. I was never notified by HP of the motherboard issues even though all my products are registered. My problems began Feb 9, 2009 and in the time it took me to research the issues and return the computer to HP my extended time ran out. After several hours on the phone with HP, I finally got escalated to a case manager, once I brought up the Nvidia classaction lawsuit. Again my computer was sent to HP for repairs, motherboard replaced for free. After 5 phone calls and about 15 hours on the phone with HP, they finally took responsibility and paid for the repair. My computer is working again and it only took 2 months and who knows how much money I spent on replacing software and activations.

well JCO funny you would mention this as my bud in town here has the same problem,HP 90 is his laptop,so after reading this thread I googled it and got this, you might get lucky Costa if you have extender warranty and are very determined..good luck

Greetings to All,

There is a lot of good info here already.

Well Costactc... And Mclovin... I'm assuming that... There is no BIOS screen on boot.

If the the external monitor connection does display on the auxilary monitor... The chipset is OK! If the chipset is ok you can skip next paragraph... Because chipset is not the problem. You may have to hit function key for monitor switching... A few times during boot... To make it switch.

It is true some Dell Laptops have the Nvidia issue. Failure of the graphics chip due to overheating... If it does not break down and show physical damage sometimes it can be repaired... By resoldering the board using a special procedure (not for the faint of heart).

Now supposing Costactc that your son's Dell does not have the Nvidia chipset or it is not the problem... The next items to fail are the LCD bulb and\or inverter. Fairly common on the Inspiron models... Can be checked by plugging good bulb in old inverter located under bezel... Or by substituting new inverter (of correct part number) to LCD screen. This applies to all laptops in general, Mclovin.

The bulb you will use to test... You may get it from local computer shop... If it has the correct connector usually the specs... Even if shorter in length are close enough to test inverter. Changing the bulb in the LCD (beyond testing) is a process... Well I've done a few and have got mixed results various times... It's best to change LCD screen to identical screen, if bulb is blown. Either process can be looked up on the net.

Take care,
