CONCORD, N.C. -- Everything seems to be smelling like roses for Carl Edwards at Charlotte Motor Speedway these days.

Or something like that.

One day after unveiling a new cologne named "Turn 4XT" that has been developed by Avon in Edwards' honor, the driver of the No. 99 Ford topped the speed chart during Friday's final practice for Saturday's Bank of America 500 at CMS.

Edwards turned a top lap of 186.008 miler per hour, backing up a strong qualifying run one day earlier and marking him as a legitimate potential contender for Saturday's event.

Edwards was followed on the Happy Hour speed chart by the surprising Reed Sorenson (185.357 mph), Kurt Busch (185.344 mph), Kasey Kahne (185.115 mph) and Martin Truex Jr. (185.058 mph).

Busch was the only Chase for the Sprint Cup driver other than Edwards to crack the top five, but he brushed the wall and did some damage to his No. 2 Dodge about midway through the session and had to come in for repairs before getting out for a few laps again. Busch then complained that the car was not handling nearly as well before coming in for more repairs and then going out again toward the end of practice.

Edwards experienced no such difficulties. Earlier, he joked after qualifying second behind only pole-winner Jeff Gordon that he's already in much better shape than when he raced at Charlotte in the spring -- and he wasn't talking about smelling better because of the new cologne.
