Could be getting ready to go out though. I had a projection tv that would work for a while and then would quit. Later it would start working again and repeat the cycle. I finally just junked it,...

Wuf it could be an isolated bug or it could be the lamps starting to go. What baffles me is the temp light.. Could it be that it went into a test mode when your son had his finger on the power button??

I had a similar problem with an RCA. It turned out to be a power converter switch.

Glad mine was warranty at the time.

RCA products, sad to say, aren't manufactured like they used to be. I have had 2 RCA big screen televisions go bad. First was under warranty so was replaced by the 2nd one which only lasted 3 years.

Some projection TV has a time "meter" to tell you how long you burnt the lamps. Same as those oil monitor in newer vehicle to tell you to change oil.
Check the manual, how many performance hours for the lamps since brand new.
Check it out, this kind of symptom may be the omen to tell you to replace them all. Or tune to a test pattern channel to look for the following symptoms, too red, too green or too blue. If you could not manually correct it. Time to switch to LCD or LED TV.

started same thing again....turns out the lamp was going bad/overheating...tech wanted 239.00 for replacement plus labor..I found one for 87.00 with free shipping...took about 10 mintes to replace and it's now working great again...cleaned it out really good while I had the cover off...lots of dust inside which most likely lead to the overheating

good to hear that you were able to fix it yourself and save a couple of bucks...
