The mixed martial arts world is engaged in an ongoing conflict that fans of the sport desperately want to see resolved.
It's been a while since the two best heavyweight fighters on the planet risked their reputations inside the cage, however, in the next two weeks Fedor Emelianenko and Brock Lesnar will both step back into the octagon ... unfortunately they won't be fighting each other.
If you read MMA rankings across the internet, including the monthly list put out by TSN.ca, Fedor holds all the power in the heavyweight division and for good reason. The Russian (32-1-1) has only been beaten once in his career, a technical knockout due to an illegal elbow from Tsuyoshi Kohsaka. That controversial loss came almost a decade ago, in December of 2000.
Lesnar (4-1) is the current UFC heavyweight champion, a powerful and imposing fighter who is still in the early stages of his career. The former NCAA All-American wrestler has been a dominant force in the UFC and with his combination of size and skill, he should be a serious threat in the division for the forceable future.
So, could UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar eventually dethrone Fedor Emelianenko?
Both fighters will be able to make their case in the coming weeks with Fedor headlining Strikeforce's most recent effort on June 26, taking on former UFC fighter Fabricio Werdum, while Lesnar will make his long-awaited return in a title defence against knockout specialist Shane Carwin on July 3.
Carwin and Werdum are both formidable opponents and represent the toughest challenges Fedor and Lesnar has faced in some time.
