After many hours of frustration, I now turn to the experts for some advice. I have a Nano 2 running 8.09 and 1.29 and it has been running for months great. Last week my daughter uploaded a Windows Vista update and corrupted my old copy of Vista. I reloaded Vista Home Basic from a disc and got the computer back up and had to download the drivers to my 56K modem from the internet. My problem is that the IP Setup will not auto load my settings automatically as before. Here's my setup:
Using dial-up - able to connect to internet with no problem
Vista software
Cat 5 cable from computer to Nano2

I have already enabled the ICS in Vista, turned off the firewall, turned off the proxy, have everything off in the Nano emu ect. I have my dial-up connection (Netzero) showing as shared but I believe the computer and the Nano 2 are not networked. Does anyone have a suggestion for me to try? I believe that my Nano 2 is OK and that I need to set up Vista correctly to communicate with the Nano 2. Has anyone seen instructions on how to set up a new copy of Vista? Thanks.

did you install the network card driver for your computer? you can check in Device Manager under Network Adapters to make sure card is working properly by right-clicking on it and go to Properties

No, I did not check the network card driver. I did verify the ethernet controller was working properly and the modem was operating correctly. I will check the network card driver tonight. thanks.

if you don't mind me asking how did you verify that the ethernet card is working properly on your computer?

I believe I clicked on it from the hardware section and then right clicked on properties, and it said the device was working properly.

are you using an ethernet cable or a crossover cable?

I've always used a CAT 5 ethernet cable. I have not used a crossover cable since my Coolsat days.

also make sure you use DHCP on your dial-up connection; ICS won't work with static IP

never tried sharing with dial-up but normally you do need to use crossover cable between 2 computers or devices that share an internet connection....can't hurt to try

I feel confident I have the right cable because it was working before the Vista crash. But I will double check that the DHCP is set up on my dial up connection. Another good suggestion. Thanks.

there is no difference in speed when using straight or crossover....it's just a method of communicating; so if the straight through does not work, give the crossover a chance

I thought of another question. I set up the ICS on the dial up connection. Is that correct or do you set up sharing on the LAN?

if you only have dial-up, then yes....ICS is configured on dial-up

you can also try bridging the 2...disable ICS from your dial-up first

then, select both your dial-up connection and LAN Connection - by holding the CTRL button; now right Click and select Bridge Connection

see if that works

Problem solved. I went through all my ICS settings and changed one thing - I selected to link the LAN with the internet supplier (Netzero) and my IP Setup numbers popped in and voila - success. Thanks to ft@t@lk for all the suggestions.

On a side note, when you disable ICS on the internet supplier, select both the internet supplier and the LAN, and right click on properties, you do not get the Bridge option. It is only available when a single selection is selected.

No, I went back and checked what kind of cable I purchased and it was a crossover cable - my mistake. You are indeed wise beyond your avatar years.
