A big Canadian freighter with a crew of 17 on board has become trapped in the fast-expanding ice covering Lake Erie.
The Manitoulin, a 663-foot vessel, remained stuck just offshore of Buffalo, New York for the second day on Thursday. An ice-cutting barge, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay, was dispatched earlier today to help free the freighter from the snow and ice field.
Coast Guard officials said ice-breaking measures have stopped for tonight and will resume on Friday.
The Associated Press said the big freighter had delivered a load of wheat to Buffalo and was departing the eastern end of Lake Erie for its destination in Sarnia, Ontario, when it got stuck on Wednesday morning.
