View Full Version : NASA's camera from a million miles away took photo of the moon in front of the Earth

This photo was taken 6 July 2015 by the DSCOVR satellite.


This is not a California fire smoke, as first of all looking at a List of California fires it seems that the only semi-major wildfire in California in 2025 was in September, 2 months after this photo was taken.


Also if you look at an animation of the consecutive photos taken, you can see that the "huge plume" is actually just a reflection from the sun (the colour is brownish most likely due to the method the photos are taken with the filters - the camera is monochrome with a colour filter placed over it for each photo, so all NASA gets is a couple grayscale photos that they then digitally colour according to what filter was used to cover the camera, and then stitch together).
