My buddy just sent me a pic of a box he bought for his mother-in-law. Ive never seen one before. Anyone try this box and does it work like a Buzz box or does it need an app installed?

If you quickly did a google search, you would have come by this review video:

Software-wise it is pretty much a buzz box (so the software is included). I would not be surprised if the hardware was also built by buzz under license agreement for Saro (but I have no idea if it is). Actually a while back there was a firmware update that went out to one of our Buzz boxes, and accidently had an incorrect setting internally, so at boot time, the buzztv boxes got the Saro logo :) As expected, it was corrected pretty quickly.

Now, I don't know what the agreement between Buzz and Saro was (or is currently) in terms of updates however. Do they get the updates at the same frequency as a buzz branded box does ? Do the OTA updates come from Buzz, or does SARO handle their own deployment of fixes. I don't know, since I don't have one. And updates I am sure will only last as long as they continue to pay Buzz for support. So don't expect the SARO boxes to get all the latest features as quickly as buzz releases them for their own boxes.

I actually just found that video and watched it. Kinda confused why Buzz would help make this (knockoff buzztv box) and you do make a good point with the updates down the road if things between Buzz and Saros go south.

It's a revenue stream. If it makes sense to their business model, then why not. And depending on the agreement model, it can be a source of "guaranteed" income, for possibly very little additional work on their part.

So for now, it will work like a buzz box but I don't want it to stop working or getting support down the road. Just use it or return and get and actual buzztv box? Guess he was trying to save money as it was cheaper than the classic I suggested?

If he doesn't want to spend that much on a 'classic', what's a good alternative from the buzz global site? Would the B5 for $99 CDN be decent enough if its just for watching live tv and movies? With the E5 being $149, prolly better paying $30 more for the classic.

My mom has the B5 also and for IPTV she has no issues with it.

If you want E5, Use discount code "satfix2021" and get 10% discount. Since the E5 is over $99 with discount, it has free shipping, the B5 you'd have to pay for shipping so the difference between the 2 is even less :)

But B5 is fine if it is just IPTV.
