hid in the Philippines jungle for 29 years after WWII as he didn't believe that the war was over. Onoda spent 29 years hiding in the Philippines until his former commander travelled from Japan to formally relieve him from duty in 1974......

His brother said something along the lines of "I don't know if he is an idiot or just that committed"
The story is a good one, Hiroo certainly was a complete idiot, he basically did not have the ability to critically think, possibly due to the Japanese government telling soldiers not to surrender under any circumstances. The lengths that Japan went to try to get him to come home after they found him. They dropped pamplets, personalized messaged to him, a Japanese explorer found him in person and showed him pictures proving the war was over, I believe his brother came an yelled at him from a megaphone begging him to come home. Hiroo thought all of this was a ploy done by America to get him to surrender. That is how stupid/committed he was, he thought the American army would go to those lengths to get one person to surrender, and it is beyond idiotic. Finally they had to send in his now almost dead commanding officer to relieve him from duty in person. Maybe living out there made Hiroo a bit crazy, thus removing his ability to think logically.

Critical Thinking should be taught in schools.
