Running a 256 gig sandisk flash drive paired to my buzz box . If I record a movie I cant ff, the spinner comes on and never leaves. Is there a preferable drive to use?

Is the drive formatted and which media player are you using?

I let the buzz box format and marry the drive. Using default player.

No difference, I had secondary set already. Put back to default same thing.

Is the USB stick a 2.0 USB or a 3.0 USB type??

The receiver may be having a problem when tying to play back if the stick is a USB 3.0, it maybe cant handle the stream, I have seen problems with older PC's trying to use a 3.0 device in a 2.0 rated port, the receiver may have too old of a USB interface (internal software) to use the 3.0 stick.

Try and find a USB 2.0 stick to see if this is the case.
