MONTREAL -- Alex Ovechkin scored two goals and Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves as the Washington Capitals defeated the Montreal Canadiens 6-3 on Wednesday night to put a chokehold on the first-round NHL playoff series.

The Capitals lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarter-final 3-1 and can wrap it up with a victory on home in on Friday night.

Mike Knuble also scored twice and Jason Chimera and Nicklas Backstrom each had one for Washington, although only four of the goals were on Carey Price, who replaced Jaroslav Halak as the Canadiens starter. Knuble's second and Backstrom's goal were into empty nets between a late goal by Montreal's Dominic Moore.

Mike Cammalleri and Brian Gionta also scored for the Canadiens, who outshot Washington 39-38.

As in Washington's 5-1 win in Game 3 on Monday, the game turned on a short-handed goal.

Montreal had taken a 2-1 and held the man advantage when Roman Hamrlik knocked down Tom Poti's clearing attempt right to Boyd Gordon. The checking centre went in on a two-on-one and feathered a perfect pass to Knuble to tie the game with seven seconds left in the second period.
