.GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It wasn’t a typical playoff game, with end-to-end action and scoring chances galore.

But the Detroit Red Wings were not in a position to be picky. They needed a win, and they got it.

Henrik Zetterberg scored his second goal of the game to snap a tie with 6:06 remaining in the third period and finished with a hat trick, lifting the Red Wings past the Phoenix Coyotes 7-4 Friday night in Game 2 of their Western Conference quarterfinal playoff series at Jobing.com Arena.

The Red Wings have grabbed home-ice advantage as the series shifts to Joe Louis Arena for Games 3 and 4, Sunday afternoon and Tuesday night, tied at 1-1.

Valtteri Filppula had two goals and an assist, while Pavel Datsyuk and Justin Abdelkader also scored goals for Detroit. Todd Bertuzzi and Niklas Kronwall each had a pair of assists. Jimmy Howard registered his first career playoff win.

Zetterberg scored the winning goal by rushing to the net and knocking in the rebound of a shot by Bertuzzi past goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.

It came just after the Red Wings had killed a slashing penalty to Abdelkader. The Red Wings, who allowed three power-play goals in their 3-2 Game 1 loss, killed all four Phoenix power plays in this game.

Filppula’s power-play goal with 2:06 remaining sealed the win. Coyotes captain Shane Doan had taken an ill-timed interference penalty.

Zetterberg completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal with 48 seconds remaining.

Abdelkader, inserted into the lineup to provide a physical presence on the fourth line, gave the Red Wings a 4-3 lead with a terrific individual effort at 2:32 of the third period.

Abdelkader stripped the puck from Wojtek Wolski just inside the Phoenix blue line, broke in alone on Bryzgalov and flipped a shot over his right shoulder for his third career playoff goal.

Doan, his club’s physical catalyst, tied the game 4-4 at 9:24, converting a two-on-one pass from Vernon Fiddler. Brian Rafalski was caught up ice, leaving only Nicklas Lidstrom back to defend.

An offensive outburst in the second period saw the teams combine for five goals in a span of 3:58. When the dust settled, the game was tied 3-3.

Zetterberg tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal at 6:27. He drove the middle of the ice with speed and converted a pass from Filppula.

The Coyotes answered on an unassisted goal by Wolski at 7:05, after some miscommunication between Howard and defenseman Niklas Kronwall. Howard had the puck in his glove and flipped it to Kronwall, who wasn’t expecting it. Wolski pounced on the mistake.

Datsyuk tied it at 8:20 on a shot from in front of the net after taking a pass from along the boards by Johan Franzen. Adrian Aucoin could not contain Datsyuk on the play.

Phoenix regained the lead on Matthew Lombardi’s breakaway goal at 9:09. He used his speed to split the defense, taking a pass from Shane Doan and sliding the puck through Howard’s five-hole.

The Red Wings, for the third time in the period, tied it when Filppula scored at 10:25. Speed, once again, was the difference, as Filppula caught up to a puck that Todd Bertuzzi laid into the zone before being laid out at center ice on a hit by Ed Jovanovski.

The Coyotes led 1-0 after one period on Keith Yandle’s second goal of the series. Yandle rushed into the slot to whack in the rebound of a shot by Martin Hazel at 10:23.

Dan Cleary prevented Phoenix from scoring earlier when he stretched to his stick on the puck and deflect it wide, as Wolski was staring at an open net.
