Genpix tuner

Several years ago I knew a guy that had a home theater PC setup with a Genpix 8PSK tuner. I don't remember what software he was using.

I just happened to be looking at satellite stuff on ebay and came across some listings for these Genpix boards.

Just wondering if anyone still uses one of the Genpix tuners that were available awhile back and what can be received with them? Is it something worth testing if I can get my hands on one?

Back in the day these tuners were the premium stuff. We used to receive satellite signals but it had to be "configured" at a financial cost.

They work very well but I haven't used this stuff in a few years now. It's used in HTPC systems and you won't find many enthusiasts around these days but the tuner is only one small piece of the puzzle. If you are not willing to make the investment in some high quality parts to build the system then it makes no sense. However if you looking to do something cheap then expect cheap results, also if you don't have some serious patience and determination then stay away.

Some people still use it but you have to have great PC skills and a good PC. If memory serves I think it can run in both Linux and Windows. But you need to run clients and plugins.

But depending on the genpix it can do several modes of satellite broadcasting. Like turbo 8PSK, DVB, DCII, DVB-S.

Yes some people still do use it. I still have my system but havent used it because the power supply went south and I getting one that acyually fits my system was difficult so I gave it a rest.

I do agree you have to have great PC skills and a great PC, that's why I said you need a ton of patience and determination and also some good high quality parts. It is not something you simply plug and play, they are is alot of trial and error involved, hence the patience and determination required. It is really a project and if you don't love these things then do not get involved.

Yes you can dual boot to either Linux or windows, the clients and plug-ins is when the headaches begin and you need a good back-end to take full advantage of the tuner and a top notch video card.

This brings back so many good memories, it is fun but do not take the frustrations you will endure for granted lol.

Let me add this and give a sneak peak to the fun involved..... You can set up your system to record two channels at the same time..... Or record one channel and watch a different channel at the same time.

Adding channels to the channel list and tweaking them will make you literally pull your out..... Lol

I like experimenting but this is probably beyond my skill level so I'll stay away from it.

The channel list is one of the most difficult tasks, you have to manually add the transponders and channels..... and all Metadata pertaining to them. Freq, sid, pid, etc etc..... It's not switching on the system and everything is fine.

I played with both genpix & dvb-s2 in my early years of HTPC: both were more trouble than they're worth.
Hauppauge & ota made them obsolete for me

They still work. If you find one get a skywalker1(USB), not the skywalker2(pci). I used smartdvb, dvbdream and sichbopvr software. I think sichbo pulled all the frequencies from his newest builds though. If you can find a CW4000HD or a CW3000HD with a built in genpix, grab it, if it is REAL cheap. To modify files(camd - server info & TP changes) on it, you'll need to install putty and winscp on your windows computer.

Actually on the DVB Dream website it says "Test your device with our trial version to make sure, or search forum. We recommend "Genpix" for USA/Canada users and "TBS" cards for Europe & the other parts of the world if you will buy a new one!".

If you get your hands on one. I can help you set it up on windows or linux.

I don't think people are scared to test at all.......

But you should know there is tons of work involved and it requires an equal amount of time. Not everyone has that patience or time or even the skills.

If you break one thing it could offset the entire system...... It is no plug and play and something is always needed to upgrade or tweak the system. A person would have to love dealing with these systems to put up with it.

I once spent an entire night awake tweaking my system.

Back in the day HTPC's were a pain. But now you can buy a mini PC that have a lot of power and are fully loaded. (‎Intel® NUC Mini PCs)

A month ago when I started this thread there was two for sale on fleabay. I didn't buy one but they probably come up now and then.

There is a Genpix skywalker 1 on ebay right now think it is at $190.00 US right now & still 5 days left. I enjoy playing with my Sat Cards started off with a Technotrend TT 3200 S2 & a couple years ago i bought a TBS-6903 Which is a great card. I use DVBViewer & DVBdream. There is a learning curve with Sat cards but will worth the time & effort.
