View Full Version : Strong wifi drops to less than 10% speed - reboot fix

5 ghz wifi and my initial SpeedTest with the box came in at my full internet speed of 60 mbps, then a day later the buffering started when watching programs and I reran SpeedTest and it came in at 4 mbps. (I do not have a hardwired ethernet option in my situation)

I am not running any VPN, my cable internet provider does not throttle, and I have experienced this with my RT-N66U router with QoS on and off.

The apps that come pre-installed have all be updated to latest version, as has the Android version.

I have deleted the cache for the Buzz TV 2 app and after a reboot I get full speed again, but this slow down seems to happen daily.

I also have very frequent "Buzz TV 2 app has crashed" notices which is annoying. Anyone else experience this?

I would run a speed test on another wireless device from the same location the moment you experience the slow-down on your buzz.May help confirm/eliminate the buzz itself.

I did that too, I just forgot to mention it. Full speed on all other devices in the same room.

Once the slow down occurs, the only way to get it back is to delete cache/reboot.

Do you have an Android receiver, other than a Buzz, that you can install the app on to see if that different receiver has the same problem?

Change the wifi channel and test the buzz, see which channel the buzz warms up to.

No additional receiver to test on, and I have tried auto channel and manually selected the wifi channel to see if there's a difference, and the wifi speed issue has occurred this on all channel settings. Very little 5ghz traffic outside of my home on any channel.

My router is the Asus RT-N66U and has never had an issue and is updated to the latest Asus firmware.

Perhaps I will do a factory reset, as I believe there is something wrong with the Buzz TV 2 app, as it regularly crashes.

Have you tried channels 36 and 149? Put it on 40mhz if it isn't.

You can try the Merlin firmware.

Her works with Asus to fix bugs and improve the firmware for the Asus router line up so his firmware tends to be fixed more often and is more stable then the Asus firmware.

Try on your asus router, turn off 2.4 and only have 5 enabled.

Oh and by the way, go into android settings, and make sure ethernet is disabled.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

I have tried all channels and have both 20/40 mhz running. No change in performance and the Buzz App is still crashing. Wifi analysis in the room the Buzz is suggests channel 149 be used, so that is running on that now.

I did not disable ethernet, so hopefully that makes a difference. I will try that tonight.

The router has been rock steady for years, so I don't know if the problem is there with software or settings, but will try if there is no additional progress.

Well it's running on channel 149 now so just monitor it and let us know.

Update: I updated the Asus router to the latest Merlin software, and see speed improvements overall, however the speed decreases from about 60 MBPS to 4 MBPS occasionally as it did on the stock firmware.

I finally gave up on wifi and bought Powerline adapters. Did Speed test and got 63MBPS. Last night all seemed well, but tonight the video was stuttering. Ran Speedtest and it was 5 MBPS. If I reboot, it goes back to full speed.

Thoughts if it is the Buzz, the router, or something else?

you say your provider doesn't throttle
try a free vpn
cause I call bull on don't throttle...they all do...it's called business
some even admit to throttling gaming sites

Got powerline adapters to see if it was wifi issue. It wasn't.
Returned the unit, to see if it was a hardware issue, and got one of the new Buzz (MyGica) XPL 3000m units. Same issue occurs.

Seeing more people post about similar experiences with their Buzz.

My provider has publicly stated that they do not throttle their traffic, and I have not seen anyone disprove this. My provider does not offer TV.

What I have found to be the solution is to never use StandBy. Always fully shut down the unit when not in use.
If you experience stuttering and see your d/l speed decreased, reboot the box and it will fix it.

Still seeing crashes every once in a while with Buzz TV 2 app.

Seems to be buggy software is the issue, but the system is much more stable now with the power off when not in use.

Its suffering the same issue a lot of android devices do with modded versions of android.

Exciting a app doesn't actually stop it but rather minimize it which causes no end of issues.

Opening up again can cause audio sync and sound issues along with the other problems you have seen.

The developers should change it so that apps are actually closed rather then minimized which would fix quite a few issues.

menu/exit
now closed

That's the way it should work but its not working correctly and never has.

For some reason even when the exit option is chosen some apps still hang around.

Not sure if it was a issue with the previous version of android on these boxes.

Still not the end of the world as a reboot fixes this.
