Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez has questioned the recent decision by Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez to get on board with a potential fight against fellow Mexican star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The camps for Canelo and Chavez Jr. are negotiating a possible showdown for May 6th on HBO Pay-Per-View - with a catch-weight of 165-pounds. Chavez Jr., who fights at super middleweight, would have to come down by three pounds - while Canelo, who holds the WBO title at junior middleweight, would come up by eleven pounds. Marquez likes the idea of that fight and believes it will be a hit with Mexican fight fans, but he finds it strange that Canelo refused to fight middleweight king Gennady Golovkin at the full division limit of 160-pounds.

At the start of this year, Golovkin was the mandatory challenger to Canelo, when the Mexican fighter held the WBC middleweight title. Rather than make the mandatory defense, Canelo vacated the belt and moved back to 154-pounds. Canelo claimed that he wasn't a real middleweight fighter and needed time to build his body to fight at the division. Canelo's middleweight fights all took place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds. "He's accepting the fight, because it is an interesting fight, a good fight that the fans want to see.... but also, Canelo refused to fight Gennady Golovkin because he didn't want to fight at 160 pounds but he'll fight Chavez Jr. at 165?," Marquez stated on Golpe a Golpe. "It's so inconsistent to me, because Canelo says no to 160 pounds and returns to super welterweight, but right now he's going to go up even further in weight to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. It's a good fight, competitive, an interesting fight between two Mexicans, but it leaves a lot to be desired because Gennady Golovkin was pushed aside." "This fight [between Canelo and Chavez] is about money, but athletically speaking Canelo has to fight Golovkin and vice versa - Golovkin has to fight Canelo. There is no way to turn away from it. It's an important fight, interesting for both but more interesting for Canelo.

According to some article i read here on the west coast... Canelo says
he has agreed to fight GG this year for sure..
First he wants an easy payday against a punching bag that was verrry lucky to win
his last fight after a long layoff..
But the suckers keep buying it...
Looking forward to Garcia vs Thurmond... gonna be great!!!
