COMPTON, Calif. -- A mother and daughter made a grim discovery early Wednesday when they spotted a burning body near a school in Compton, sheriff's officials said.
The adult's body was found on fire around 3:15 a.m. in the area of Oleander Ave. and Cocoa St., across the street from Compton High School, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Compton Station.
The mother and daughter spotted the flames and went over to investigate. Once they realized it was a body, they called authorities.
Lt. Henry Saucedo called the scene "100 percent evil."
"You do this more than 20 years and you think you've seen everything. Then you see this."
Firefighters extinguished the flames.
Authorities say they're not yet sure whether the victim was a man or a woman, however, the witnesses said it appeared to be a man, about 19-to-20 years old.
The victim's foot had also burned off of the body, witnesses added.
It was not exactly clear what killed the victim.
Investigators believe the person was already dead when they were set ablaze.
