After several failed negotiations, boxing finally has it’s next great mega-fight scheduled. According to Kevin Iole at Yahoo Sports, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have agreed in principle to a fight in September 2017.
Alvarez, the Lineal Middleweight Champion, has yet to fight at the 160-pound middleweight limit, but has been publicly pining for the fight with Golovkin for over a year, only to see private negotiations stall several times. Golovkin is widely regarded as the world’s best middleweight fighter and best puncher in boxing, and has spent his ascendence to stardom seeking fights with the likes of Canelo, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto and anybody else with drawing power within shouting range of the weight class.
The delay is twofold for the Canelo camp. The publicized reason for the 15-month window is that Alvarez needs to get comfortable at the middleweight limit and GGG needs time to continue to build his name. But with Golovkin at 34 years old the delay also adds another another year of wear and tear on the Kazakhstani slugger.
Alvarez’s promotor Oscar de la Hoya announced the agreement on Twitter.
Rumor has it that Canelo will visit Our Lady of Lourdes and pray that GGG gets hit by lightning before then!
