Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead.

Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.

I was never a big Ali fan. But may he Rest in Peace.
He was a great asset to boxing. Hard to believe he and "Smoking Joe" have left us.

RIP to a great man....a kinder, more gentle peaceful man than he was given credit for. As for his boxing skills....he revolutionized the sport and his personna took it out of the back rooms and to the front pages. Angelo Dundee had a great quote "Ali was the greatest because he said he was......and everyone believed him".

Sad, but who among us wouldn't have loved to be as great as he was......just as sad is that the man that flew like a butterfly and stung like a bee really left the building long ago due to illness.
