My daughter recently sold her house and moved in with her boyfriend who owns his own house. He has a one car garage in an established area of town, trouble is he had a manual garage door (perish the thought). A year ago my daughter and her boyfriend asked me to automate the garage door but I told them the joists were too low to do it properly and inexpensively.
Well......they had a "friend" who "does stuff" LMAO.......this is what he did (keep in mind these aren`t the actual pics but close)

Now when I saw their accomplishment last year in the fall....I told them to start saving their money because very soon this would happen...

and it did during the winter and a lot worse than the pic I showed in fact the bow in the middle of the existing joists runs 15 feet from the garage door. Now they get to do this.......

I`m going over there now to count out the 2X8, carrage bolts, etc that I need to "sister" the split joists....It would be a lot funnier if I wasn`t the guy that had to fix it..........DAMN KIDS!!!!

It`s a plumbing run all right.........in case you read by it and hadn`t noticed those pics I posted are NOT the actual pics of their garage just an example of the joist work that has to be done.

Well I got back from their house.........problem is a lot worse than I thought. Their "friend" pretty much notched 90% of the joists for the track of the opener and a couple of them (9 in all) he notched about 80% thru so no wonder the roof is caving in............

This was my answer for them Liftmaster 8500.....................running at about $500(Canada) that should have been installed day 1 and no issues with the roof would have occurred..Maybe they`ll listen this time....

Notice there is no middle track involved........

Dang! I like that idea. When you coming over or do I need to modify my joists first so they collapse then you come over and tell me I should have followed your post! Lol

Just wondering, do you install the ceramic floor too? Lol Who the heck puts a ceramic floor in a garage??????? Now that is a man with more money than brains and a wife running the show!

"wife running the show".................you need go no further!

Maybe she`s setting a trap............next she`ll have the floor sealed and watch hubby go airborne the first time it gets a little slush on it. (I made that mistake years ago sealing my concrete garage floor with terrazzo sealer I zipped from work...learned the hard way never to do it again)

That`s just an example of the garage door assembly...it`s not their garage. However they do have an opening at the back of the garage going up that a set of pull down stairs has already been mentioned LOL........I should send them both up there to measure BEFORE I fix the joists and I wouldn`t have to do any of it.
