Edmonton Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse has been suspended three games by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety under rule 46.2 (Aggressor) for his altercation with San Jose Sharks defenceman Roman Polak.

Rule 46.2 states:

“The aggressor in an altercation shall be the player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on his opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an unwilling combatant.”

The incident occurred late in the third period of the Sharks 3-0 victory over the Oilers on Tuesday night, when Nurse engaged Polak in a fight as he was leaving the ice on a line change.

Both players were given fighting majors on the play, though Polak never dropped his gloves. Nurse also received an extra roughing minor penalty.

Nurse pursued Polak in retaliation for a hit two minutes earlier by Polak on Oilers forward Matt Hendricks. Polak was assessed a two-minute minor on that play for interference.

Nurse, 21, will forfeit $13,924.74 in salary to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
