As the Toronto Maple Leafs and its legion of fans prepare to celebrate the club’s Centennial season, the franchise unveiled a new logo tonight that will serve as the team’s primary mark beginning with the 2016-17 season. The logo, introduced to fans in tonight’s episode of ‘The Leaf: Blueprint’, was inspired by the classic Maple Leaf worn by the team from the 1940’s to the 1960’s, regarded by many as the most iconic and popular logo in team history.
“As an organization, we wanted to get back to our roots, when Conn Smythe first changed the team logo to the Maple Leaf in 1927,” said Brendan Shanahan, Toronto Maple Leafs President and Alternate Governor. “Inspired by the badge that he and his fellow Canadian soldiers wore during World War I, Smythe wanted his team to wear the badge with ‘honour, pride and courage. This is our goal for the next chapter in Leafs history. We are committed to restoring the Toronto Maple Leafs to a proud and prominent place and this classic logo will connect the team’s championship legacy with an exciting and proud future for our players, our city and for our fans.”
Inspired by the classic Leafs logo of the 1940’s to 1960’s, the club’s new mark has a number of design characteristics that distinguish it, including:
• The new Maple Leaf has 31 points, a nod to the year 1931 and a defining moment in team history with the opening of Maple Leaf Gardens. The new logo maintains a strong connection to the classic Leafs logo of the past while offering a fresh take on it for the future.
• The new badge contains a total of 17 veins, representing the year the franchise was founded (1917), and includes 13 veins at the top of the crest to commemorate the club’s Stanley Cup Championships.
• The outline, seen in the most recent version of this Maple Leaf from 1963-67, has been removed to create a cleaner, bolder look.
The Maple Leafs will unveil the team’s new uniforms incorporating the logo at the 2016 NHL Draft to be held June 24-25 in Buffalo, New York.
In keeping with past traditions, the Toronto Marlies will also adopt the Maple Leaf’s new mark which will incorporate the historic Marlies crown into the logo.

Wow, ground breaking at it`s finest. If one person actually dumps $250-$400 on one of these "new" sweaters he should be committed. Until the Leafs prove to me they have indeed committed themselves to a complete rebuild with no outside influence from Larry Tanenbaum or MLSE I won`t give them a thin dime. So far in this "rebuild" that is all their talk....they have spent a fortune on management, legends row, advertising and so on..........their rebuild consists of dumping Kessel to this point and virtually nothing else.

The Maple Leafs are in a class by themselves ,, I don't think it matters whether they have a winning product on the ice or not because the seats are sold out for every game,, they have the strongest corporate involvement in all of hockey ,, as well as the greatest fan support in all of hockey.

Like Babcock said ,, it wont be an over night success,, expect it 3 - 4 years in the making

You`re exactly right in the fact that the Leafs have corporate support across the board and are sold out for the next ten years.....however....the Leafs fell drastically last year in merchandising and at the concessions indicating that while tickets were sold fans weren`t attending. Last year the Leafs fell from their stranglehold on #1 in revenues in the NHL to #3 behind the Habs and the Rangers.....stockholders in MLSE took note and it was they who inadvertently fostered the "rebuild". Let`s not forget the Leafs are run by a corporation, not a private ownership, which forces it`s executives aka board members to acknowledge the wishes of it`s stockholders back to #1 or face losing their cushy jobs. Back to #1 or at least competitive hockey is the way these board members keep working for those fat paychecks.....hence the rebuild.

Merchandise sales are down and with this emblem change their sales are going to sky-rocket due to the fact everyone wants the latest and from those that say the old ones will be collectors one day so it's a win win merchandising ploy. Good thinking brass!!!!
Now all they need to secure the pocket books for a few more years is a great rookie purchase or a Sidney Crosby or the likes to join the club.

There sure seems to be a lot of hype about him going there.

Toronto sports media is all about hype and no substance.......

The Leafs would be far better off spending Stamkos money on building themselves from the back end out and concentrating on getting a defense before adding any more forwards. They have the much celebrated (by Toronto media) the likes of Nylander and Marner to shore up offensive prowess in the near future.

Don`t be a bit surprised to see Stammer in Montreal.........as much as I`d hate it.

Stammer in Montréal !!!
Now that would be exactly what they need, imagine him in the line up and Price back in nets ?
that would be awesome :)

Bergevin got in bed with Bettman over the Scott fiasco for some reason.......although I doubt they could maneuver a deal with Stamkos if the Habs kept up their string of becoming a lottery team would it be so far fetched or past Bettman to guarantee Auston Matthews??? OR a guarantee of Quebec City NOT getting a franchise this year??... I put nothing past Gary Bettman.

Crosby to retire wearing a habs jersey?

You're right about Bettman ,,,

Stamkos is looking for 10M/py over 8-10 years,,, or somewhere similar to Toews, Kopitar and Kane
With the Canadian dollars sinking lately, raising salary cap is going to prove very difficult for the NHL

The question remains whether or not Tampa was cap room to sign Stamkos and still be able to keep
a quality team together since the have about 7 restricted players to sign this off season including
Hedman and Bishop.

The thing is,, Toronto has cap room , it's going to be interesting

The NHL orchestrated the trade of Gretzky to the LA Kings to further the expansion of hockey to the SW markets......so anything is possible. Habs would have to wait tho for Crosby as they really only have Price or possibly a pkg including Subban and a #1 at least for Crosby. Stammer is a UFA this summer and as long as the Habs have cap space all it will cost anyone is $$$$$$$$$

Am not in their books ,, but they paid Subby 9.5M/py over 8 years (I think)
Don't think there's enough room to pay another superstar salary

I`m thinking if Yzerman was going to sign Stamkos it would be done by now........The Leafs will be in even better cap position after the trade deadline when decent teams pick them over for draft picks and nobodies which seems to be the Shanaplan. Guys like Stammer, Kessel etc need support and aside from Komorov (who I expect is gone at TD) who do they have? I`d rather the Leafs build from the back end out like all championship teams do. I`d have much rather seen them take Provorov last year than Marner.

I think that by now,,, Phaneuf has spent his last chance in Toronto ,,, he needs to go
IF ,, they can get rid of him at trade deadline (even if they eat the salary)
will make Stamkos a reality and that will be a good start to the rebuild ,, they can look for
defenseman as they come up ,, either this year or in the off season

What they need is an increased membership of the QRA(Quebec Referees Association)....sad to see Habs fans tonite anxiously waiting for their complimentary PP at the Bell Centre in the last 4 mins of a close game....only to be denied.

Funny, I just don`t see them shedding themselves of Phaneuf, keep him as a massively overpaid #2/#3 line defensman and he`s OK........Gardiner has to go and Hunwick is no #1 line defensman....the other contract they`ll have to eat is Lupul because nobody is going to bite there. Polak I`d love to keep but he`ll be gone at TD...........before you say it, Kadri is staying no matter what, just look at the board members and the lower bowl at the ACC to see why. He`ll play up to his capabilities this season, sign a fat 6-8 yr deal and disappear.
