Lucas Matthysse and Viktor Postol will fight for the vacant WBC junior welterweight title on Oct. 3 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., according to reports. The fight is expected to be on HBO.
No official announcement has been made.
Matthysse is recognized as one of the most entertaining fighters in the world but has never held a world title. He lost a decision to then-WBC titleholder Danny Garcia in his only title shot, in 2013.
The Argentine slugger is coming off a thrilling majority-decision victory over Ruslan Provodnikov in April.
Postol, a 5-foot-11 technician from Ukraine, has victories over Selcuk Aydin and Hank Lundy. He’ll have a distinct height advantage over Matthysse, who is 5-6˝.
Matthysse (37-3, 34 knockouts) and Postol (27-0, 11 KOs) will be fighting for the title vacated by Garcia in June.
Garcia was supposed to have defended against Postol, the mandatory challenger, but paid him to step aside so he could fight Lamont Peterson in April. Postol outpointed journeyman Jake Giuriceo on that card.
Garcia then decided to vacate and move up to welterweight, at which he’ll face Paulie Malignaggi on Aug. 1. That opened the door for Matthysse, who is the sanctioning body’s No. 2 contender.
On the undercard, prospect Antonio Orozco (22-0, 15 KOs) reportedly will face Humberto Soto (65-8-2, 35 KOs) in a junior welterweight fight.
