Featherweight champion Jose Aldo may not be fighting at UFC 189, but the results of his controversial drug test administered in Brazil in June were revealed this week with the veteran coming back clean of all performance enhancing substances. The Nevada State Athletic Commission released the results to FOX Sports on Tuesday.
Aldo gave a urine sample to a collected in Brazil and as the lab results show, he had no signs of any illegal substances in his system.
The controversy about the drug test stems from a collector flying from the United States to Brazil to test Aldo, but once he arrived questions started springing up on whether he was legitimately there on behalf of the Nevada Commission or not.
A call was made to CABMMA (The Brazilian MMA commission) and officials there stated they had not been notified about any test. Typically with Aldo's fight happening in Nevada, the Brazilian commission wouldn't be notified but they got involved with the situation anyways and discovered the tester, Ben Mosier, didn't have a proper work visa to travel in Brazil.
So the test collector was fined and given eight days to leave the country and his original sample was destroyed.
Aldo took a second test the next day with the Nevada collector standing nearby with the sample then being shipped off for testing back in the United States. Those results showed Aldo had no signs of any performance enhancing drugs in his system.
Aldo is currently on the mend after suffering a broken rib that forced him out of this weekend's fight with Conor McGregor. The featherweight champion hasn't set an official timeline for his return, but it's expected he should be ready by October.
