Sorry guys, California can not have a large earthquake as shown in some Sifi films, the biggest recorded EQ in California was the Fort Tejon quake on January 9, 1857, it was a magnitude 7.9, an 8 to 8.5 may have occurred in unrecorded times, but never one big enough to split us off into the Ocean.

The San Andreas fault is a strike/slip fault, this means the two plates (Pacific/North American) are sliding along side each other, (Pacific plate moving South/ NA plate moving North) in a few million years LA and San Fransisco will be across the bay from each other. (if there is a Bay)

Evidence of this North/South movement can be seen in the Pinnacles National park in central California, (a nice place go see it) it has a rock formation (an extinct Volcano) that looks (and is) split in half and one half missing, the East side (the missing half) is 150 miles to the South, this because the park sits right on top of the San Andreas fault line.

Now up off the coast in Oregon on up to British Columbia is a Subduction fault, HERE is the greatest chance of a 9+ quake, here the Juan De Fuca plate is sliding under the North American plate, this is creating a subduction rift zone similar to the one under Japan, Indonesia and South America's Chile/Peru coast line.

Here is the greatest chance of a very large quake in the 9 plus range, also some very very damaging tsunami's.

And Steve, don't forget about the Long Valley area, if it pop's I will be under 40 to 50 feet of hot lava, it is the second largest super volcano in the US.
