Three people were shot near the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara on Monday evening, according to campus and fire officials, but no further details were immediately available and it was not clear if anyone was killed.
The Santa Barbara County Fire Department website said the shooting occurred in the community of Isla Vista. A UC Santa Barbara security alert said a male suspect was seen fleeing the area in a white sedan around 7:30 p.m. and advised residents to stay indoors while police searched the area.
The shooting comes roughly a year after Elliot Rodger, 22, stabbed three men to death in his Isla Vista apartment before fatally shooting three more people near the campus. He then shot and killed himself.
That shooting reignited a national debate on gun control and spawned legislation in California requiring local law enforcement to search a database of firearms owners in most cases when carrying out checks on people who may harm themselves or others.
There was no indication that Monday's shooting was in any way connected to last year's rampage. Isla Vista is about 107 miles (172 km) north of Los Angeles.
