COLUMBUS, Ohio — Authorities say a shooting on the Ohio State University campus has left one person dead and injured two others.

According to an OSU police dispatcher, the three people were shot early Tuesday inside a maintenance building near the campus power plant, which is close to Ohio Stadium.

Police told WBNS-TV in Columbus that one person was pronounced dead at the scene, and two others were taken to Ohio State University Medical Center, where one victim was in critical condition and another in stable condition. The university says the shooting did not involve any Ohio State students.

Police say the shooting suspect was taken into custody after heavily armed officers searched the power plant and area.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State University says a 51-year-old worker suspected of opening fire and killing another employee has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

University officials said at a news conference Tuesday that a third employee wounded in the shooting at a campus maintenance building early in the day was hospitalized in stable condition.

No students were injured in the shooting early Tuesday, and university officials said classes were being held as scheduled.

University Police Chief Paul Denton said a third employee was pronounced dead at the scene.

University officials said the shooting, first reported at 3:30 a.m., involved its facilities department and that the suspect was one of the two wounded workers. A university spokesman, Jim Lynch, declined further comment.

Police did not release any names. Investigators were trying to determine the suspect's motive, Denton said.

Heavily armed campus officers searched buildings in the area, including a university power plant, and the person who police believe was responsible for the shooting was taken into custody, Denton said.

"This is a tragic event, and our hearts go out to all of the families," said Vernon Baisden, a university assistant vice president of public safety.

Graduate student Kiernan Gordon, 31, said he found out about the shooting from his wife, who called him on his cell phone while he was driving to campus. He said he didn't have any concerns about his own safety.

"Ohio State is really a city unto itself, and like any city it has problems unto itself," Gordon said.

The maintenance building where the shooting occurred is just east of Ohio Stadium, where the school's football team plays.
